Active Galactic Nuclei in Void Regions

چکیده
We present a comprehensive study of accretion activity in the most underdense environments in the universe, the voids, based on the SDSS DR2 data. Based on investigations of multiple void regions, we show that Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are definitely common in voids, but that their occurrence rate and properties differ from those in walls. AGN are more common in voids than in walls, but only among moderately luminous and massive galaxies (Mr < −20, log M∗/M⊙ < 10.5), and this enhancement is more pronounced for the relatively weak accreting systems (i.e., L[OIII] < 10 39 erg s). Void AGN hosted by moderately massive and luminous galaxies are accreting at equal or lower rates than their wall counterparts, show lower levels of obscuration than in walls, and similarly aged stellar populations. The very few void AGN in massive bright hosts accrete more strongly, are more obscured, and are associated with younger stellar emission than wall AGN. These trends suggest that the accretion strength is connected to the availability of fuel supply, and that accretion and starformation co-evolve and rely on the same source of fuel. Nearest neighbor statistics indicate that the weak accretion activity (LINER-like) usually detected in massive systems is not influenced by the local environment. However, H iis, Seyferts, and Transition objects are preferentially found among more grouped small scale structures, indicating that their activity is influenced by the rate at which galaxies interact with each other. These trends support a potential H ii→Seyfert/Transition Object→LINER evolutionary sequence that we show is apparent in many properties of actively line-emitting galaxies, in both voids and walls. The subtle differences between void and wall AGN might be explained by a longer, less disturbed duty cycle of these systems in voids. On the magnetic fields in voids
We study the possible magnetization of cosmic voids by void galaxies. Recently, observations revealed isolated starforming galaxies within the voids. Furthermore, a major fraction of a voids volume is expected to be filled with magnetic fields of a minimum strength of about 10 −15 G on Mpc scales. We estimate the transport of magnetic energy by cosmic rays (CR) from the void galaxies into the v...
متن کاملThe parsec scale region of Active Galactic Nuclei in the IR
First results from the AGN-Heidelberg program aimed at spatially resolving the central pc region of the closest Active Galactic Nuclei are presented. The core region of prototype active nuclei are clearly unveiled at IR waves and at distances from the nucleus few pcwhere circumnuclear starforming regions appear not to be present. Within that perspective, classical active nuclei as Circinus and ...
متن کاملVariability of Active Galactic Nuclei
Continuum and emission-line variability of active galactic nuclei provides a powerful probe of microarcsecond scale structures in the central regions of these sources. In this contribution, we review basic concepts and methodologies used in analyzing AGN variability. We develop from first principles the basics of reverberation mapping, and pay special attention to emission-line transfer functio...
متن کاملDoes the Radiative Avalanche Fueling Work in Any Active Galactic Nuclei ?
Recently Umemura, Fukue, & Mineshige (1997) proposed the radiative avalanche fueling to active galactic nuclei; gas accretion is driven by radiation drag exerted by stellar radiation from circumnuclear starburst regions. This mechanism is also interesting in terms of starburst-AGN connections. We therefore present observational tests for the radiative avalanche fueling. Our tests, however, show...

With the ability to see into optically obscured regions with more than an order of magnitude better sensitivity and spatial resolution relative to current (sub)mm telescopes, ALMA will provide a unique look into the physics of galaxy formation and active galactic nuclei. In this paper I summarize the ALMA potential for studying star forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei from the nearby un...
